At long last, we may be returning to the original two-sided sense of the word virus, which originally signified either a life-giving substance or a deadly venom. Viruses are indeed exquisitely deadly, but they have provided the world with some of its most important innovations. Creation and destruction join together once more.
Government can only do two things: It can beat people up and kill them. Or it can threaten to do so. When it seems to be doing something else - for example, handing out money or, say, surplus cheese - what's actually going on is that something has been taken away from one set of individuals by deadly force or the threat of deadly force, a hefty middleman's fee deducted, and whatever is left thrown to peasants delighted to receive stolen goods.

Like no other writer in contemporary American literature, Brock Clarke has a way of looking at us, I mean looking straight at us--warts, lots of warts, and beauty and hypocrisy and love, too, the gamut. And hes done it again in this brilliant The Happiest People in the World, a novel that is as hilarious and thought-provoking as it is ultimately, deadly, deadly serious. I for one am grateful hes out there--watching our every move.
Intelligent, thinking people could take things like this in their stride, just as they took the larger absurdities of deadly dull jobs in the city and deadly dull homes in the suburbs. Economic circumstances might force you to live in this environment, but the important thing was to keep from being contaminated. The important thing, always, was to remember who you were.
There is no question that Darren Wilson caused the death of Michael Brown by shooting him, but the inquiry does not end there. The law authorizes a law enforcement officer to use deadly force in certain situations. The law allows all people to use deadly force to defend themselves in certain situations.

He grinned. 'I was trying to remember all the deadly sins the other day, ' he said. 'Greed, envy, gluttony, irony, pedantry... ' 'I'm pretty sure irony isn't a deadly sin.' 'I'm pretty sure it is.' 'Lust, ' she said. 'Lust is a deadly sin.' 'And spanking.' 'I think that falls under lust.' 'I think it should have its own category, ' said Jace. 'Greed, envy, gluttony, irony, pedantry, lust, and spanking.

By all odds, earliest man, so naked to the elements and to deadly enemies, should have existed in a state of constant shock. We find him instead the only lighthearted being in a deadly serious universe.... He alone, with childish carelessness, tinkered and played, and exerted himself more in the pursuit of superfluities than of necessities. Yet the tinkering and playing, and the fascination with the nonessential, were a chief source of the inventiveness which enabled man to prevail over better-equipped and more-purposeful animals.
I lifted my wand, hoping she would see this as a dramatic move, not a threat. 'Why once, in my bunker at Charing Cross Station, I stalked the deadly prey known as Jelly Babies.' Neith's eyes widened. 'They are dangerous?' 'Horrible, ' I agreed. 'Oh, they seem small alone, but they always appear in great numbers. Sticky, fattening-quite deadly. There I was, alone with only two quid and a Tube pass, beset by Jelly Babies, when... Ah, but never mind. When the Jelly Babies come for you... you will find out on your own.' She lowered her bow. 'Tell me. I must know how to hunt Jelly Babies.' I looked at Walt gravely. 'How many months have I trained you, Walt?' 'Seven, ' he said. 'Almost eight.' 'And have I ever deemed you worthy of hunting Jelly Babies with me?' 'Uh... no.
